Eagles Baseball Off to One of Their Best Seasons Yet
Liberty Common baseball is in the midst of one of its strongest seasons in recent memory. The Eagles have already matched last year’s win total of five—with ten games still left on the schedule. Currently ranked 25th in Class 3A, the team is playing well-rounded, competitive baseball against a tough slate of opponents.
Under the leadership of first-year head coach Phil Hartwick, the Eagles are seeing the results of its hard work in the offseason. Coach Hartwick is especially proud of the development and impact of his freshman class, which has stepped up in a big way.
Through 12 games, Liberty Common is batting .303 as a team over 379 plate appearances, with 85 total runs scored. Their .408 on-base percentage is right in line with the national average, according to MaxPreps.
With only three seniors on the roster, the team has leaned heavily on underclassmen—and they’ve delivered. Freshman catcher Raphael McDanald has been outstanding both at the plate and behind it. He ranks second on the team in slugging percentage at .514, leads the team in doubles with five, and is second in RBIs with 10. Defensively, he’s holding a .952 fielding percentage.
Freshman infielder Bowyn Caudill is also turning heads with a .379 batting average and a .500 OBP—both second-best on the team. Fellow freshman Lucas Wagner has become a reliable utility player and courtesy runner, contributing whenever his number is called.
Veteran leadership has helped balance the roster. Junior Bryson Weibler leads the offense with a .432 batting average and a .523 on-base percentage. Weibler also tied the career RBI record and is two shy of the career record for hits. He will look to rewrite these records with continued dominance at the plate. Senior Owen Hood ranks third in the Patriot League with 10 stolen bases—just one behind Weibler. Fellow Senior Hudson Bookhout has been a stout third basemean keeping the five gap closed with zero errors in eight of their twelve games. With talented veteran leadership at the plate and in the field the underclassmen have plenty of teammates to learn from.
On the mound, junior Roman Galindo has emerged as the staff ace. With 27 innings pitched and a 3.11 ERA, he continues to give the Eagles a chance to win every time out. In Monday’s matchup against Valley (April 14), Galindo threw a complete game, striking out four and allowing just three hits across seven innings.
Come support the Eagles this Saturday at 11:00 AM as they take on Weld Central in a key league matchup at Edora West Ball Field!
